Disorders and acute diseases

• Severe pneumonia which is the infection of one or both lungs. If it is severe, it causes deep inflammation of the alveoli so that they cannot exchange enough oxygen with the blood.
• Severe asthma attacks which is a disease of the lungs that causes inflammation and constricts the bronchial tubes. The majority of asthma patients, including many children, are able to manage their symptoms safely. However, if the asthma attacks are severe, the patient may need to be admitted to the hospital for oxygen therapy.
• Respiratory distress syndrome or bronchopulmonary dysplasia in premature infants. Premature babies may have one or both of these serious lung diseases. As part of the treatment, you may receive oxygen through a breathing device or oxygen therapy mask, nasal continuous positive pressure, or through a nasal catheter.

Disorders and chronic diseases

• COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). COPD is a progressive disease in which injury to the alveoli prevents the passage of sufficient oxygen to the blood. The adjective “progressive” means that the disease tends to get worse over time.
• Severe heart failure. In this disorder, the heart is unable to pump a sufficient amount of oxygen-rich blood to meet the body’s needs.
• Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease of the exocrine glands, including those that produce mucus and sweat. In patients suffering from cystic fibrosis, the airways become filled with thick, sticky mucus, which facilitates bacterial growth, causing severe and recurrent lung infections. Over time, infections can seriously damage the lungs.
• Sleep-related breathing disorders that reduce the level of oxygen during sleep, such as sleep apnea.
• Group headache which is extremely painful and relapsing, with active phases alternating with periods of automatic remission. These active phases are called “clusters”.
